Tips For a Successful School Year
As school begins, it is important to keep in mind the importance of social-emotional development. Social-emotional development becomes effective when it is practiced in school, the community, and the home. Families are children’s first teachers, and bring deep expertise about their development, experiences, culture, and learning needs. Implementing social-emotional learning at home doesn’t have to be complicated. By incorporating social-emotional skills into daily routines and activities, parents can integrate social-emotional learning into their child’s life. When children acquire and apply the knowledge to express their feelings, practice social skills, and develop relationships, they will develop a strong sense of empathy, resilience, and problem-solving abilities.

STRATEGIES TO USE AT HOME:
SLEEP, ROUTINES, NUTRITION
Sleep is crucial for brain development and cognitive functioning. Establishing a daily routine including family meals, bedtime, and playtime is important. Adequate nutrition is vital for optimal brain development. Provide your child with a well-rounded diet including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, dairy
or dairy alternatives, and healthy fats.
LITERACY
Designate specific periods to come together and enjoy reading, playing, singing, and laughing. Dedicate a special area for quiet reading time. Engage in storytelling, cultivate creativity, and spark imagination together.
SCREEN TIME
The CDC recommends limiting screen time to 30 minutes per week in early care and education settings. When using screen media with children ages two and up, the CDC recommends using it for educational purposes or physical activity and avoiding using it during meal or snack times.
EMOTIONAL REGULATION
Emotional regulation helps children manage their feelings, cope with stress, and navigate social interactions effectively. Help your child identify and label their feelings. Practice random acts of kindness with each other and with others.
