International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On December 3rd, each year, we commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day dedicated to acknowledging the struggles, achievements, and contributions of individuals with disabilities worldwide. Approximately 61 million, or nearly 1 in 4 (26%) people in the United States,
live with a disability. As a parent, it’s important to help your child understand
and learn about people who have disabilities.

What is a disability?

A disability is any condition of the body or mind that makes it difficult for a person to do certain activities and interact with the world around them.

What is inclusion?

Inclusion is the practice of including and accommodating people who often face discrimination and exclusion due to race, gender, ability, sexuality, or identity.

What is disability inclusion?
Disability Inclusion means understanding the relationship between the way people function and how they participate in society. It also involves ensuring everybody has the same opportunities to engage in every aspect of life to the best of their abilities and desires.

Ways to Promote Inclusion and Awareness

Include/Invite: Invite and include people with disabilities in everyday roles and activities. Seeing people with disabilities engage in everyday roles and activities shows that everyone belongs, and everyone contributes. It shows and teaches children what individuals can do rather than what they cannot.

Educate: Allow individuals with disabilities to share their experiences and perspectives. The best way to learn about a person is to learn directly from them. Ask questions such as what challenging barriers they face daily or anything else going on in their lives such as hobbies, jobs, etc. Encourage and allow children to ask questions as well. It’s better to ask for an explanation than make assumptions.

Model: Children learn what they see and hear. The way we describe people can be damaging or empowering. Ways to create an inclusive environment involve using positive and respectful language when speaking about others and communicating directly with individuals rather than talking about them.

Challenges People with Disabilities Face

Discrimination: People with disabilities often face discrimination in various forms, from negative stereotypes, limited employment opportunities, and unequal access to education, all of which impede inclusivity.

Accessibility: People with disabilities are at a disadvantage due to insufficiency of physical space, information, and assistive technology. Making public spaces, transportation, and digital platforms more accessible and making simple modifications, such as ramps and screen-reader-friendly websites, can make a strong impact.

Health: People with disabilities often face unequal access and quality of care. A person with a disability is more likely to struggle with obesity, smoking, heart disease, and diabetes.
